Davos (Romansh: Tavau , archaic Italian: Tavate, German pronunciation [daˈvoːs]) is a municipality in the Prättigau/Davos Region in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It has a permanent population of 11,109 (2015). Davos is located on the Landwasser River in the Rhaetian Alps between the Plessur and Albula Ranges. At 1,560 m (5,120 ft), it is the highest “town” in Europe.  In the 13th century, when the Walsers settled in the Davos region to live as farmers, no one thought of Davos would become Europe’s highest altitude holiday town some 700 years later. The shift from peasant village to an international resort area was initiated by Dr. Alexander Spengler’s discovery of the curing influence the Davos climate has on tuberculosis.
