An official visit to Abetone, Italy occurred May, 2012 and after deciding Abetone was a perfect match for Aspen, the delegation went back in May, 2015 to sign and become sister cities. The official delegation from Abetone came to Aspen October, 2015 to sign the treaty here.

Abetone is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Pistoia in the Italian region of Tuscany, located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) northwest of Florence and about 49 kilometres (30 mi) northwest of Pistoia. As of December 2004, it had a population of 699 and an area of 31.2 square kilometers (12.0 sq mi). Abetone served as the finish of the 5th Stage of the Giro d’Italia 2015. The stage was won by the Slovenian rider Jan Polanc who broke away from his companions on the final climb up to Abetone and went on to win by 1 minute and 31 seconds. 

Famous in Abetone is ski racing legend Zeno Colo. At the World Championships held in Aspen in 1950, Colo won gold both in downhill and giant slalom and silver in slalom. He also won gold in 1952 in Oslo a the Winter Olympics. He ties our two towns together.
