JILL SHEELEY: ASPEN ATTENDS CHAMONIX’S IDA CHAPPOT WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

After ten unsuccessful years of trying to gather a team to compete in Chamonix’s international women’s Ice Hockey Ida Chappot Tournament, 2022 proved to be the winning year.  Normally, at least 10 players and a goalie would be the minimum to compete but with Aspen’s ski season still rocking and a drastic shortage of substitute teachers, the Aspen Mother Puckers made the journey with a goalie and 5 skaters.  The tournament, hosted by the Chamonix Angels, took place over the weekend of April 16th and 17th and was attended by three Swiss teams, one American team and the French team.  Six games were played over the two days split by a wild evening of dinner and entertainment at the Folie Douce followed by a late night of dancing downtown.  The Puckers grabbed players from the other teams and ended up in second place, first place being taken by a young group of hot shot Swiss skaters. The Chamonix Angels put out a lunch spread both game days at the ice rink with cakes, salads and wine (of course).  Playing for the Puckers were Hailey Guglielmo, Katrina Devore, Maria King, Lucy Perrutz, Alicia Ziff and Isabel Day.  Supporting the Aspen team was Linda Gugliemo and Ozzy Benson.  The days not playing hockey were spent skiing and tracking down Cham exchange  patrollers, going up l’Aiguille du Midi, Montenvers, biking and eating, of course. Next year the tournament will take place in May and Aspen will hopefully attend with a larger squad.
